Iranian Plato is the land from Central Asia to Western Asia, where Rumi, Hafiz and many other mystics come from. Home to Persians and several ethnic groups, including Kurdish, Gilani, Azerbaijanis, Turkimans, Armenians, Assyrian, Bakhtiari and Baluchi peoples.
In this music journey we will experience Persian traditional, Kurdish and Gilaki music. Persian traditional music relies on both improvisation and composition, and is based on a series of modal scales and tunes that is used to create intimate sound; telling the story of lover and beloved witnessed in the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz . . . etc.
We will also experience music of two of these ethnic groups from the Iranian Plato, Kurdish (from the western regions of Iran) and Gilaki (from the northern regions of Iran, south of Caspian sea). Gilaki & Kurdish music is known for an earthy, dance-oriented sounds.
Instruments used include the bowed spike-fiddle kamancheh, the goblet drum tombak, the end-blown flute ney, the frame drum daf, the long-necked lutes tar, base tar and oud and the dulcimer santur, qanun.
On this night we begin by the art of improvisation in Persian Traditional Music, a trio improvisation of Tar (Persian string instrument, Ney (Persian Reed Flute) and Tombak (Persian goblet drum) by Ostad Derakhshani, Shaho Andalibi and Pedram Khavarzamini. We lead into classical music of Iran, Kurdish and Gilaki music performed by wonderful ensemble consisted of world renewed and talented Iranian musicians living in Toronto, Canada.
